Baby Dayliner (aka Ethan Marunas), 30, ist waschechter New Yorker, ging auf die LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts (ja genau, die High School aus „FAME“) und studierte auf dem St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland. Nachdem er an unterschiedlichen Instrumenten in den verschiedensten Bands nie so richtig glücklich geworden war, fasste Ethan einen Entschluss: Er wollte es als Solokünstler probieren. Rasch eignete er sich die nötigen Fertigkeiten an Synthies und Samplern an und begann, eigene Songs zu schreiben. Und so entstand nach und nach dieses kleine Wunder: Baby Dayliner, ein Solo-Act mit einer ziemlich einzigartigen Bühnen-Show. Verglichen wurde Baby Dayliners Musik – wohl nicht zuletzt wegen seines vollen Baritons – schon mit (und jetzt wird es abenteuerlich): Serge Gainsbourg, Frank Sinatra, New Order, James Brown, David Bowie, Daft Punk, The Smiths (insbesondere natürlich Morrissey), Stephin Merritt, Adam Green.
Sein zweites Album „Critics Pass Away“ nahm Ethan Marunas in seinem Home Studio auf (von HipHop-Produzent Blockhead „The Manor“ genannt, nachdem sie dort zusammen Blockheads erstes Album „Music By Cavelight“ (Ninja Tune, 2004) produziert hatten). Ethan spielte fast das ganze Album selbst ein: egal ob Violine oder Bass, Gitarre, Drums oder Synthesizers. Lediglich Damien Paris (Gitarrist von The Giraffes) stand ihm des Öfteren zur Seite. Bei „Silent Places“, der ersten US-Singleauskopplung, sitzt der Schauspieler und Musiker Adrian Grenier („Entourage“ u. a.) am Schlagzeug.
Der Titeltrack „Critics Pass Away“ verrät viel über Marunas’ persönliche Philosophie: Selbst wenn unsere Physis vielleicht nicht die besten Voraussetzungen bietet, können wir durch mentale Stärke und Kreativität unserem Leben Bedeutung verleihen. Recht hat er. Weitere Highlights auf dem Album sind: die rauen, progressiven Dance-Hymnen „At Least“ und „Whodunit?“ oder die superromantische Ballade „The Way You Look Tonight“. Nicht zu vergessen das treibende „Go On Baby“, das verträumte „Breezy“, die Player-Attitüde von „Nature’s Clause“ oder das fein gedrechselte „Drop Dead Gorgeous“, das an The Postal Service erinnert.
Live ist Baby Dayliner eine Macht. Er performt im Karaoke-Style zu seinen Tracks wie eine vollkommen ernsthafte Version von Har Mar Superstar oder Peaches. Oder besser noch: ein Frank Sinatra oder Tom Jones für die junge urbane Bohème. Liest sich, als wäre das kaum zu ertragen, funktioniert aber. Davon wird man sich bald überzeugen können. Eine Deutschland-Tour ist in Planung.
